What is a Self-Tie or Loop Lock Label?

What’s A Self-Tie Label?

A self-tie label, commonly known as a loop lock label, is an identification label with a self-contained fastening system, designed to wrap or loop around an item and fasten onto itself easily and securely – all without the need for adhesives or fasteners such as string, clips or cable ties.

These labels incorporate a die-cut slot or hole that the tail of the label can feed through to form a secure loop.

What are they for?

A self-tie, or loop lock label, is a great way of displaying product information on a range of products, and across various industries. This can range from displaying bar codes for stock control in a warehouse, for point of sale on plants in a nursery, or batch identification in a commercial laundry.

They’re also a great way of securing a label where adhesives aren’t suitable, for example on rough, greasy or irregular surfaces, such as in the steel and construction industries.

Industries that typically use self-tie, or loop lock labels include:

  • Horticulture
  • Food production
  • Fresh produce
  • Leisure and tourism
  • Commercial laundry
  • Recycling and waste management
  • Metals, construction and engineering
  • Timber production

Tough, Durable Materials

Self-tie labels are designed primarily for industrial use, and this requires them to be made from tough, durable materials that are designed to last. Some of the conditions that loop-lock labels need to withstand include:

  • Exposure to direct sunlight (horticultural self-ties)
  • Exposure to humidity and sometimes rain
  • Knocks and abrasion
  • Temperature extremes (food processing)
  • They also need to be tear-resistant

Self-tie labels tend to be made from flexible, durable synthetic materials such as plastic (including polyethylene/PE or polyethylene terephthalate/PET), although eco-friendly, paper-based alternatives are now being used more widely.

The food production industry uses something a bit different – a paper-based loop lock label with a metal detectable core that can be detected if it ever contaminates a food product. These can often withstand higher temperatures than plastics and ensure the safety of food products we eat every day. Other materials and constructions may also be required and can be incorporated into a fully bespoke offering.
