Labelling in Harsh Outdoor Conditions: Tips for Nurseries and Growers

Nurseries and garden centres can be particularly harsh environments, particularly those where plants are displayed outdoors – products are required to sit out in the wind and the rain, in beating sunlight, on hot summer days or the freezing cold temperatures of winter – it almost makes the surface of the moon seem more welcoming!

And because of this, the labels that you choose to identify your plants need to be pretty robust to stand a chance of lasting through the seasons! We’ve put together this list of tips that any plant growers really need to consider...

Know Your Materials

To cope with the harsh, outdoor conditions of the horticultural industry, the choice of materials for your labels needs to be carefully considered. You’ll need a label that lasts in unfavourable environments - one that won’t blow away in strong winds, won’t fade in the sunlight and one that won’t fall apart at the first sign of moisture!

As such, synthetic materials (aka, plastics) remain the material of choice due to their tough and robust nature, which simply can’t be matched by paper-based products. Put simply, they need to be fit for purpose!

We’re well aware of the issues surrounding single-use plastics, and at Bluepoint, all our labels and tags are fully recyclable, and we use a range of recycled materials too, such as our post-consumer recycled (PCR) self-adhesive labels, diverting single-use plastics from landfill and ensuring our part (and yours!) in the circular economy.

Synthetic materials are tough too: They can withstand the harsh nature of horticulture, including being resistant to moisture, UV light (the sunshine!), they’re tear and scratch resistant, and can withstand a wide range of temperatures - from a freezing winter’s day to the heat of a record-breaking summer scorcher!

Printing and Visibility

Bluepoint’s synthetic label materials are also the perfect choice for printing – whether that be custom pre-printing done by our team of flexographic print technicians – or printed in-house as and when needed.

At Bluepoint, we supply materials for both laser (sheeted labels for full colour printing) and thermal transfer printing (labels on rolls for rapid, single-colour output).

Both of these printing methods use long-lasting, UV resistant inks and resins to ensure that your labels won’t fade, and remain legible throughout the season.
